Suffragettes Tea Party
We’ve had an amazing week in DVR! We were honored to accept an invitation from President Michael D. Higgins and Sabina Higgins to attend a Garden Tea Party in the Áras an Uachtaráin to celebrate the Suffragettes.
We sauntered through the beautiful gardens, played croquet on the lawn and admired the works of art gifted to Ireland from various countries over the years. A particular favorite piece of art work is the The People’s Acorn, well worth a see if you happen to find yourself strolling around the grounds of the Áras!
A fantastic speech was given by Michael D Higgins (it’s worth a watch… the link is below!) a history of the women’s movement – the hardship, the bravery and the activism. It was witty, unapologetically feminist and inspiring! We commend President Higgins and Sabina for their work in celebrating the Suffragettes and for their support for grassroots, feminist and community organisations.
“If we, as citizens of a Republic we wish to be meaningful in the best sense of that term, can call up and demonstrate the same indomitable spirit, the same bravery, the same compassion, I am confident that we can continue the work they began so many years ago.”
