One Million Stars
DVR has provided a forum and a focus point for dialogue, education and awareness of all aspects of women’s inequality and violence against women issues in Galway City and County in the past twenty one years.
We provide a safe space for women to discuss violence against women’s issues and these include Discussion Circles, Conversation Workshops, information inputs with community groups, rural and urban based women’s groups, individual women for specific events such as International Women’s Day, Brigid’s Day and 16 Days of Action Against Violence Against Women.
We are currently running the One Million Stars Campaign.
The One Million Stars campaign began in Melbourne, Australia in 2012, when sadly an Irish woman was murdered. A Samoan Artist Maryann Talia Pau began weaving stars in a bid to end violence. Each Star symbolises light, hope and solidarity.
There are now over 4 million stars weaved worldwide. DVR ran One Million Stars workshops though out 2021. They were held in Letterfrack NW Connemara, Carna, Inverin, Carroroe, Westside in Galway City, Direct Provision Centre Salthill. These workshops created conversations about domestic abuse and the specific services DVR offers.
