The vision of Domestic Violence Response (DVR) is a society that understands and deals effectively with domestic abuse.

Domestic Violence Response (DVR) is a Galway City and County based service that provides information services, telephone and counselling support, advocacy support and accompaniment and educational programmes to women impacted by domestic abuse. DVR also provides a range of educational training and awareness programmes to organisations, third level colleges, community groups, secondary schools.

Our Mission

The mission of Domestic Violence Response (DVR) is to identify and respond to the needs of women and children in County Galway who are subjected to violence and abuse in the home and to develop long-term responses that work towards the elimination of domestic abuse.

Our Priorities

  1. To support women and children who are subjected to violence in the home
  2. To provide education, training and awareness work
  3. To contribute to national policy on domestic abuse

DVR Timeline

  • 1992 - 1997

    • Letterfrack Women’s Group and group of individuals joined together to campaign for supports in rural Connemara
    • Funding secured to create a service
    • Board of Directors identified and trained
  • 1998 - 1999

    • Opened first office in Recess National School Connemara
    • Recruited trainer and trained staff and volunteers to provide services
    • Employed 1 part-time staff
    • Identified volunteers
    • Networked with other service providers to establish referral pathways
  • 2000

    • Became a registered company limited by guarantee
    • Commission for survivors of abuse in Letterfrack Industrial School –
    • The Frack Remembered
    • The Connemara Justice Project booklet published
    • Began to provide outreach, support and advocacy services in North and South Connemara
  • 2001

    • Provided face to face and phone support to 20 new clients in 2001
    • Created literature , posters etc to advertise service.
    • Began public awareness campaign
    • Developed policy and procedures for service delivery
    • Developed and rolled out advocacy service
    • Official launch by Eamon O Cuiv in Tullycross, NW Connemara
  • 2002 - 2005

    • Secured funding from Equality for Women Measure
    • Employed 5 part-time staff
    • Produced Living to Tell the Tale and Home Truths – Educational Resources
    • Provided group support to 30 women in North and South Connemara.
    • Produced I know a Women poetry booklet
  • 2006

    • Moved to new premises in Oughterard
    • Produced teenage educational resource Life’s Real Fairytale
    • Began school educational work with transition year students in Galway City and County
    • 2006: 99 clients received support
    • 2006: 139 client appointments
  • 2009 - 2012

    • Experienced severe cuts in funding
    • Established outreach rooms in Triskel Healing Centre, Salthill, Galway
    • Registered as a charity
    • Developed staff training and employment manual
    • 2009: Provided 97 court accompaniments
    • 2012: 119 new clients
    • 2012 Commenced annual lecture with Maynooth on Domestic Violence on Rural Women’s Issues
  • 2014 - 2018

    • Developed and delivered educational support programmes for women
    • Initiated Parenting in the Aftermath of Domestic Violence Support Programmes
    • 2017: 245 clients received support
    • 2018: Celebrated 20 years in operation
    • 2018: 233 clients received support
  • 2019 - Present

    • Moved to new premises in Moycullen
    • Employed 2 extra counseling support workers, a development worker for South Connemara
    • HSE funded project to work older women and rollout across City and County
    • Developed a Court Proposal and engaged with staff to develop advocacy initiatives
    • Contributed to women’s health initiative
    • Radical Listening Project
    • Developed art project collaboration with Engage Art Studios as part of
    • Galway City of Culture: Home Truths and circulated awareness
    • Produced new literature, developed new website
